I was drawn to the quietness of this part of Japan. The soft glow of the lights, the warmth of the colours and the occasional bicycle passing through the streets made everything feel slow and peaceful. There was a sense of comfort in the ordinary, a quietness that made the unfamiliar feel strangely familiar. I painted this in watercolour and ink to hold onto that feeling, rather than simply the place itself.
